Extraction of wisdom teeth

Extraction of wisdom teeth

A specialty of the Pierre Fauchard Dental Center

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last to erupt in the mouth, often between the ages of 17 and 25. Their emergence can be accompanied by various problems such as pain, dental crowding or infections. In some cases, wisdom teeth extraction may be the recommended solution to preserve the overall health of your mouth.

Wisdom teeth should be extracted when they cannot emerge normally, leading to pericoronitis (inflammation and infection of the gums around the partially erupted tooth), or if there is bone loss or decay in the neighboring tooth.

The idea of wisdom tooth surgery can be apprehensive for many people. However, at the Pierre Fauchard Dental Center, these extractions are part of our specialties. We strive to ensure you have an exceptional dental experience, focused on your comfort and well-being.

Problems associated with impacted wisdom teeth

Sometimes the wisdom teeth are impacted, that is, they are stuck under the gums and cannot emerge normally. When a tooth is impacted, it can grow at an angle that forces other teeth to move apart to make room for it. Most of the time, people discover that a wisdom tooth is impacted when their dentist examines dental x-rays. An unusual angle or position may indicate a potential problem.

When wisdom teeth are impacted, they can cause damage to other teeth by pushing them out of the way. This can lead to the potential for other teeth to crack or weaken due to nerve damage. Additionally, cysts can form in the area where the tooth is trying to erupt, causing pain and increasing the risk of infection. The presence of impacted wisdom teeth can also lead to early tooth decay, as the area affected by the wisdom tooth is often difficult to clean properly.
